Start a Movement Community Today!
Expression is a priority of The Movement because it is a way to worship God and connect to each other. We encourage people to use their gifts and talents to express their spirit. Through the outpouring of our hearts and living out the desires God has given us, we present our whole lives to God as living sacrifices. Expression can take on any form that is good and pleasing to God, such as art, music, being outdoors, cooking, writing, and surfing. These things become wordless languages that speak directly to the spirit, and when people experience them together, they are able to connect to each other in a true, deep way. We have seen how groups develop naturally around people’s interests and forms of expression. This is one of the greatest tools we have to reach out to others and develop relationships. Furthermore, living out our expression together as a group is a way to bond because we are making ourselves vulnerable by pouring out our hearts and living out our passions together.
The Purpose of Expression being a core value of The Movement:
To support individual and group expression as part of the movement in order to reach out to the public and share our faith, serve the community, and live out our God-given desires and talents as acts of worship.
Goals:
1. Every movement group is actively living out expression together.
2. Groups display their expression in the community and invite others to join them. Examples of this could be a group of artists painting a mural for a neighborhood, a group of athletes beginning a league in their town, a group of people who are passionate about a certain cause starting a ministry, such as serving unwed mothers. The possibilities are endless.
Ministry possibilities include:
- The ministry possibilities are endless because the expression in each group will vary immensely.
- People can live out their interests and hobbies within the context of their community and invite other people to join them.
- Groups organizing fellowship times for Bible studies and worship.
Keys to success:
- A coordinator who can organize the group activities and social help projects.
- Committed group members who contribute to activities, events and are active in social help projects.
- Individuals that are committed to building relationships and using opportunities to share their faith.
- Creative and flexible participants.
Benefits:
- Building Movement groups around people’s interests is a sure way for people to get involved and be passionate about the group. Since everyone in the group will be able to contribute, they will feel a sense of ownership and be committed to the purpose.
- Whether the people involved are Christ followers or not, they will be utilizing their God-given gifts and talents, which will help bring them closer to their Creator and find His purpose for their life.
- Through the spirit of expression people are able to connect with each other on a deep level. This will open many doors for us to build relationships and evangelize.
- We can do a lot with expression in terms of holding events and activities. These events will be a great way to promote the Movement and its culture, as well as social help projects.
Music / Expression - The Band “Into the Sea” as an example of how music is an expression to build and facilitate community.
Music will play a vital role in all that The Movement does. With this in mind we have already begun forming a band called “Into the Sea”, which will be a major focus of our ministry efforts.
One of the primary ways that expression will give momentum to The Movement and make an impact on the world is for groups to form around people with similar abilities and talents and holding events and activities that will display their expression and reach out to the community. Naturally hype forms around these activities and people are drawn to it. This is already happening with the band ‘Into The Sea’ and people gathering around practices and concerts, simply wanting to be a part of something exciting and full of passion.
Starting the band, ‘Into The Sea’ is our way of living out expression. It is a way of being a part of the community that we live in. We can also use the band to promote social help projects and Movement events. We hope to have many other bands, painters, writers, directors and designers participating with us. The value of expression applies to all people and their unique way of living out their passion
Our band is about love, passion, anger, joy and unity. We want to get people together and unite them in an experience that goes beyond just musical notes. We are not about bending to the latest trends. Instead, we are about the music and everything that the music stands for.
The overall purpose of the band is to make great music that allows people to experience the values and culture of The Movement. The band may not be directly linked with The Movement in every way, but the individual members are spokes people. As the band’s influence grows so will our opportunities to promote The Movement.
Being a band and playing concerts allows us to develop relationships with people that we wouldn’t normally be in contact with. We have already seen this happen in the few concerts we have played. People connect to the music and we develop friendships with them, which turn into ministry opportunities. The band literally gives us a platform for us to express the calling and desires God has given us and invite them to participate in our mission.
One of our goals is to start a record label. We hope to create friendships with bands all over the world and for many of them to become involved in The Movement. The idea is to create a community of all forms of artists.
We want to be clear…art engages, represents and challenges our cultures. We’d like for music to challenge people to help others. The music is its own language. After concerts, on outreaches and in small groups is where we would speak the Gospel to people. We can involve members of our small groups at concerts by giving them opportunities to meet new people and share the love of God.
Ultimately, the use of music and artistic expression will be a pathway for the Movement to creatively spread the love and hope of Jesus Christ to a world where many Christians have chosen to ignore.
