Start a Movement Community Today!
Introduction
When Alternative Missions was established in 1996, our motto was “Creative Ways to Reach the World”. That motto remains true to this day. It is our desire to express the love of God in ways that are relevant, creative and tangible in order to influence people of all cultures to come under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Over the years we have established medical and dental clinics, built and operated schools, planted churches and participated in various evangelistic outreaches. However, as time presses on and we see the advent of new technologies, new social structures and the unstoppable presence of social networking, we must ask ourselves what are we doing to utilize these creative resources to reach our world. Ministry pioneers Andy & Nayeli Hackett along with Josh & Stephanie Horvath have developed a new ministry paradigm that seeks to answer this question. By partnering together with Alternative Missions and Vineage.com, Andy, Nayeli, Josh and Stephanie have developed a ministry model they have dubbed, “The Movement”.
This ministry is an arts-based church planting movement that utilizes creative expression and social helps projects to speak to the hearts and minds of people and introduce them to Jesus Christ. In addition, it is this ministry’s desire to disciple those to whom they minister and mobilize a movement of people into a spontaneous planting of churches facilitated by the VineAge.com web-based tool. Ultimately it is the goal of The Movement to encourage the creative expressions of faith and “church”. God has designed the church to be an expression of who He is and what He does. The church in its many forms is His temple where He dwells. God calls us to individually know him and then to come together as His community to learn from one another and to live out life with one another. Our knowledge of God grows as diversity comes together in unity with Jesus present with us in the many expressions of the body of Christ.
What makes this model successful?:
Knowing that God is in control and we are relying on his Spirit to guide us, the ministries of The Movement are organic, meaning they are alive and develop through natural growth. We are setting the model, but we encourage others to be involved according to how God is leading them as a group and their unique circumstances, such as the people involved, the location, culture, and available resources. Everyone will express their walk with God in their own unique way.
We are trying to reach a culture that has not been reached through the mainstream church or by traditional methods. The priorities of The Movement - community, social help, and expression, are all things that people are longing to be a part of. People desire to belong to a community where they can contribute and express themselves with the passions God has given them. They are searching for a savior and a hope in their lives. Although they might not know it, through The Movement, they will be living out the desires God has given them and following His teachings, while getting closer to Him and learning His purpose for their lives.
One of the major differences of The Movement from other religious organizations is that we strive to meet the people where they are, instead of trying to draw them into our world. For this reason we do not want to build a physical church, but instead meet in houses, cafes, parks, or anywhere that these people normally hang out and feel comfortable. We want to help people see that God is there in the things that they enjoy and the truth they already have in their hearts. This ministry model is successful because there is low or no overhead costs, it empowers the whole community to minister, it is evangelistically minded, and discipleship is a natural process within the communities.
In order for this to happen, we want to accomplish the following in the future:
- Develop a partnership with a respected social help organization.
- Connect, organize and support groups around the world through Vineage.com.
- Develop and expand a short-term missions program.
- Recruit and train a full team of staff that will continue to develop The Movement.
- Band is signed and has begun world-wide tour.
How will this ministry be developed?:
The Movement will spread primarily through relationships. Groups will be based around a certain commonality that all the members share. For example, the group in Guadalajara, Mexico is focused around music. As groups get out into the community and live out their core values, others with similar interests will be drawn to them. The band is also integral to developing The Movement. At the concerts people will connect to the music, which will open doors for us to build friendships and invite them to Movement events. Another tool we hope to use is video to broadcast Movement events, such as a concert or a social help project. There are potential opportunities to air video on a local Mexican TV station, and we will also use the Internet to post video. We are also looking for a “Pastoral Coordinator” of The Movement, who will play a huge role in developing The Movement groups. If anyone wants to start a group, this person will guide them in the right direction, as well as support them and direct their growth.
What type of partnerships are needed?:
The Movement and the band ‘Into The Sea’ are both in need of various partnerships immediately and in the future as they grow. The Movement needs people who will partner with them financially, to cover administrative costs such as an office and supplies, and for the salaries of non-missionary staff in Mexico. One day we would like to partner with a respected social help organization, so that through the band and The Movement we can funnel resources into it and make an even bigger impact with the projects. The band also needs people to partner with them financially, to purchase equipment in order to play concerts, eventually tour and record, and to develop a record label.
Do short term teams play a role in this ministry model?:
We hope to start short-term missions as the right people partner with us to make it possible. Right away there may be opportunities for teams to come and be involved with Movement events based around expression and social help projects. As groups form throughout the world, there could be many opportunities for teams to help in these locations. Since expression is one of the main priorities, we would encourage teams to be creative and serve with their unique talents and gifts.
